MoM lineup for 2017
Linda McRae
Linda McRae is a Canadian – US based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and 2016 BC Entertainment Hall of Fame Pioneer Inductee. Her unforgettable melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, make her a captivating and sought-after artist. Linda has performed in venues as diverse as Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre with the VSO and New Folsom Prison, where she facilitates writing workshops for the inmates. These experiences lead to the creation of her Express Yourself Writing Workshops currently being presented across North America. No Depression Magazine, John Apice, “Linda carries on a priceless tradition of folklore through her music even though her songs are originals. She is firmly footed in the mud and moss of country-folk-blues.” US Promoter, Fernando Pinto: "One song breaks your heart, the next one puts it back together" Georgia Straight, Vancouver, BC, John Lucas McRae's powerful voice and folky songs are goose bump - inducing. The evenings finale found McRae inviting all the eveningʼs performers back on- stage for an impossibly big-sounding rendition of the Louvin Brothers “When I Stop Dreaming”. Austin Chronical, Jay Hardwig, -SXSW PICKS “Linda McRae brought her strum and alto inflections to Maggie Maeʼs. Drawing inspiration from Charlie Louvin & Neil Young, her music is contemporary folk with a touch of country, a collection of ballads, blues, & love songs.” https://lindamcrae.com/ |
Carolyn's Side of the Story...
I grew up on a dairy farm in Sicamous, BC with my Austrian father, my English mother and my Canadian brother. My father, an accomplished violinist, taught me how to play the piano when I was very young. He liked nothing better than to play duets with me for any visitors that happened by. Paying no heed to the musical tastes of the times or our guests, my father would perform for his hostages, launching into a favourite Dvorak or Chopin, poking me in the back with his bow if I appeared forgetful, shy or unenthused. Mortified, I longed for giant flames to eat the piano and my father. I have since developed a more light-hearted relationship with music. My first band was The Vinaigrettes. We started as an all-girl foursome from Victoria and played together, in spite of a dizzying number of line-up changes, for seven years. We toured our pop - surf - punk - art - country - rock asses across Canada several times, but then, after a few years, Brigette, the smart one of the group, consulted an atlas and we started venturing South when we realized that Los Angeles was closer to Victoria than Edmonton - and the swimming was better! The Vinaigrettes recorded six albums, achieving a modest amount of obscurity, and broke up in 1998 due to "nervous indifference" and "creative exhaustion," vowing to "sue the industry for abandonment," and leaving dozens of fans mildly disappointed. Exhausted and emotionally crushed by the failure of my first band and the ensuing two year bender, I attempted to find solace in the rehearsal spaces of other bands such as: Hat Head, The Fixin's, The Show Business Giants, The Metronome Cowboys, The Corn Sisters (a duo with label-mate Miss Neko Case), Monster Tweety, and Klugman. But eventually, while hiding under the bed at one of our neverending house parties, I decided to use my own name when I played. So far it's been a good idea - I'm not married to any one style of music, I can play solo or with a band depending on the money or my mood, and it's almost impossible for me to break up with myself. Those curious about my "sound" will just have to listen to the record I guess. If you are a newspaper sort who doesn't know what to say, I've never had a problem with the words "lovely and talented." Thank-you and goodnight. xocm http://www.carolynmark.com |
Doug Koyama
Doug Koyama is a singer and performer currently based in the central interior region of British Columbia. A shift in 2009 lead to a strong desire to travel and perform as his prime mode of existence. In the winter you may find Doug working in a dish-pit, as a school photographer or, more recently as a private chef. Summers are full of music festivals all across BC. His open-hearted sharing of everything he is and has keeps Koyama in good standing on the festival circuit and a perrenial favourite at many of the festivals he performs at. Each springs’ musical adventure has started a little earlier for the past few years (the end of March in 2017), leading to a transition to a life of full-time music, which is his goal. Doug performs Improvised A Capella with a loop pedal, a style popularized by American musician / comedian Reggie Watts. The loop pedal allows the layering of sounds, vocal percussion, and melodic and harmonic phrases. By controlling these elements, as well as live vocals, he builds songs out of his imagination. Each song is unique and inspiring with just enough room for your imagination to blossom into whimsical and romantic dream-scapes in your mind. Alexander Varty, The Georgia Straight "STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN when Douglas Koyama opens his mouth. Sounds spring forth and combine into rhythmic phrases, then stack into layered constructions. It might seem like magic, unless you know that he's using a digital looper to create his improvised excursions, and even then it's still quite beguiling, a gentle and melodic take on an avant-garde technique that has its roots in Steve Reich and Terry Riley's experiments of the 1960s." https://dougkoyama.bandcamp.com/ |
Maxim Banjo Man Cossette
Multi-talented entertainer Maxim Cossette delights you with his fun and engaging glimpses of life. His music will get you snapping your fingers, tapping your toes, and may well swing you out onto the dance floor. As a solo singer-songwriter who has a longstanding love affair with the banjo and slide guitar, his roots and experimental vibrations will transport audience members to magical realms where gentle demons are coaxed out to play among the musical scales. Inspired by more than ten years of touring and performing across North America and Europe, his direct and honest messages include nods to his encounters with the wild side of life, as well as engaging musings on the esoteric. Whether you know him as Maxim, Banjo Man, or Salvador Dali Lama, you’ll find his live performances upbeat and entertaining. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Maxim is now based in Bragg Creek, Alberta, where he teaches both banjo and guitar. He is also the charismatic leader of the Maxim Cossette Combo, a longstanding “Djangobilly” band bringing rockabilly, gypsy swing, and good ol’ rock and roll sounds, and he represents one half of the no-boundaries electronic-folk duo Adult Children. Aedan Helmer, The Ottawa Sun “Maxim Cossette made for an engaging frontman, regaling the audience with tall tales of a misspent youth, spinning those yarns into songs about vampires, longboarding, and adventures at Burning Man with banjo in hand.” Jessa Runciman, CBC News Ottawa “Imagine a gypsy-folk band hurtling through space, and you'll get a vague idea of what Adult Children sounds like. At the duo's core are traditional folk melodies and romantic lyrics, but they're juxtaposed with electronic touches that up the quirk factor.” Kristin Endemann, Ottawa Citizen “Feeling sleepy and cold and as if the holidays have taken every last ounce of strength that ever existed in your body? Shake it off — as some famous blonde says, get out the winter boots, the dancing shoes that fit in your coat pockets and get ready for some pop fun, starting with an exciting EP release show from the newly formed Adult Children, comprised of John Aaron Cockburn (Little Suns, currently on hiatus) and Maxim Cossette (Sick Sick Sicks).” http://www.maximcossette.com/music |
Folky Strum Strum more than words.......
The People that make up Folky Strum Strum play their version of Banjo Rockin’ folk music. October 2013 marks when the second album 'Son Stand Still' hit shelves! 'You could say we started in this project in the kitchen and ended up dancing in the livingroom. And, yes, what a great dance it's been...' - Bert Goulet, Producer Iyan Bruvold, singer/songwriter, banjo & guitar player, started strumming the guitar at an early age almost instantly began song writing, which has recently won him the honourable mention award in the Song Writing Competition at ArtsWells 2010. The Kwerks
"I'm quitting my job and I'm pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a rock star. In my 30s. After having "settled down". After marriage (well, during, actually), mortgage, career, kids, dog, and everything else that comes with those. And yes, it's a bit crazy. Oh, and Ryan's doing it with me." In the spring of 2015, Laura had an epiphany - a suppressed dream unearthed itself and made its way to the front and centre, and she, along with her husband, Ryan, dove in head first. She left her career, sent her previously homeschooled kids to school, and took up her guitar. The many months that ensued have been pretty wild, and The Kwerks have made a splash wherever they've tested the waters. They put out their self-titled debut EP in April 2016 and have been heard on college radio across the country and blasted out the windows of many a happy car. Their music is a mix of folk-pop, bluegrass and a bit of country. Their live performances are peppered with sassy dance moves by Ryan and cheeky stories flowing from their 17 years of life together. They have a way of making audiences laugh to tears, and leave happier than a bunch of carrot-filled bunnies. Together and separately, they've been compared to The Weepies, Will Ferrell, Sarah Harmer, and The Beatles. Only some of that statement is true, actually. Sometimes The Kwerks will make things up to make a joke. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the pair performs as a duo, and sometimes they bring their whole band along for a full-bodied experience. Either way, they bring loads of fun to the stage with music that has been described as "fresh", "unique", and "catchy". Packed with rhythm, the songs are written by Laura, and pack in about as much authentic honesty as you can handle in one sitting. Some of them will make you cry. Others will make you laugh and want to dance. Either way, you'll be an emotional mess by the end of the set. The Kwerks apologize for that, but kind of like it. http://www.thekwerks.com |

Dave Soroka
I live in Grand Forks, British Columbia, right down on the US border. I've been writing songs since 1969 when I got my first guitar at 15. I'm an Army brat, but I call Grand Forks my home town. When I was young I worked as a section man on the Canadian Pacific Railway, pulled boards on the green chain for Pope And Talbot, loaded boxcars and drove a boom boat for MacMillan Bloedel on Vancouver Island, fought forest fires...but for the most part I've been self-employed all my adult life, doing whatever it takes... I have three kids and three grandkids so far. I didn’t raise my own kids so I can't brag about how they've all turned out, but they're all beautiful. To date I've written about a thousand songs and I've recorded a number of CDs. As far as my goals for my art: I just want the listener to feel some of what I feel. |

Gisto
In 2011 Gisto made his first journey to the Fatherland of Reggae Music: Jamaica. He arrived with no hotel, no contacts and no idea what he would find there – just a desire to connect with the music and culture that influenced his life. Within about two weeks on the island, Gisto went from a stranger to a recognized musical personality on Jamaican television. Upon arrival his first step was to catch a taxi. He played his album “Just the Beginning” for the taxi man named Pretty. ‘Pretty’ quickly recognized Gisto’s talent as a singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He introduced him to the Jamaican born artist DreZee with hope that Gisto would find his musical footing on an otherwise difficult island to navigate. After a half hour of showcasing his beats and music in Dre’s studio, Gisto was invited to stay-on. Within a week the artists had done a number of collaborations and shot videos. Dre then introduced Gisto to the rest of Jamaica thru the debut of their video for “Invincible” on HYPE TV. From that point Gisto’s fate was sealed. He was now recognized on the same level as the artists that have influenced his music for years. However, Gisto is more than a Reggae artist/producer. He is changing the sound of music one song at a time. By combining the sounds of Reggae, Dancehall, Pop, Dub-Step, and Hip Hop along with his smooth one of a kind vocal styling, he creates a sound that is uniquely his own. One fan said that it’s easy to fall in love with his relatable songs that speak to personal and worldly matters. Many fans have claimed that once a Gisto CD is played it stays in rotation until it skips or is stolen. http://gistomusic.com |
